Climate Fix: what scientists and politicians won't tell you about global warming

by Roger Pielke

Pielke, an environmentalist, policy analyst, and son of a noted meteorologist, clearly has a distinct, insider's understanding of the highly charged global-warming issue. Here, he sets out to "clarify the climate debate in a way that anyone who can use a bit of addition, multiplication, and common sense can make sense of." The discussions have become so polarized as an issue of policy vs. science that the actual concerns have gotten lost. The numerous recent books on the topic only add to the debate. Pielke is unusual, as he neatly separates the science of climate change from the rhetoric, bringing the issue back to the realm of rational discussion. Assuming that readers have a working knowledge of climate science, he handles the technical aspects in a general way. It is not until the end that he briefly discusses specifics of how climate change could actually impact the future. VERDICT Overall, an excellent primer for getting past the politically charged debate clouding the issues. Recommended for readers confused by the deluge of conflicting climate information and willing to revisit the quandary and make their own assessments.

Global Warming

by Jane S. Shaw

Environmental topics pervade classrooms today, but true understanding of them is elusive. All too often, subjects such as global warming, species extinction, and the role of pesticides are reduced to simple slogans because accurate information is hard to find. Yet there is enormous scientific debate about these topics. Thomas Jefferson said that "difference of opinion leads to inquiry, and inquiry to truth." Critical Thinking About Environmental Issues will prepare young people to become inquiring citizens by introducing them to the scientific and economic debates that underlie environmental issues. Each volume will provide readers with a range of scientific views and theories on an environmental topic and introduce facts that are sometimes ignored. Each will help readers use their critical thinking skills. By exposing students to differences in opinion, this series will enable them to search for the truth and to make their own decisions.

The Great Warming: Climate Change and the Rise and Fall of Civilizations

by Brian Fagan

What a difference a degree makes. From the tenth to the fifteenth century the earth experienced a rise in average temperature that changed climate worldwide - a preview of today's global warming. As archaeologist Brian Fagan shows in these pages, subtle shifts in the environment had far-reaching effects on human life. Fagan unfolds both a scientific detective story, showing how centuries-old weather patterns can be reconstructed from scattered clues, and a vivid and timely historical narrative. A study of the first Great Warming suggests we may yet be underestimating the power of climate change to disrupt our lives today.

Hot, Flat and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution -- And How It can Renew America

by Thomas L. Friedman

Thomas L. Friedman takes a look at two of the biggest challenges we face today: America's surprising loss of focus and national purpose since 9/11; and the global environmental crisis, which is affecting everything from food to fuel to forests. In this groundbreaking account of where we stand now, he shows us how the solutions to these two big problems are linked - how we can restore the world and revive America at the same time. Friedman explains how global warming, rapidly growing populations, and the astonishing expansion of the world's middle class through globalization have produced a planet that is "hot, flat, and crowded." Already the earth is being affected in ways that threaten to make it dangerously unstable. In just a few years, it will be too late to fix things - unless the United States steps up now and takes the lead in a worldwide effort to replace our wasteful, inefficient energy practices with a strategy for clean energy, energy efficiency, and conservation that Friedman calls Code Green. Friedman makes it clear that the green revolution we need is like no revolution the world has seen. It will be the biggest innovation project in American history; it will be hard, not easy; and it will change everything from what you put into your car to what you see on your electric bill. But the payoff for America will be more than just cleaner air. It will inspire Americans to something we haven't seen in a long time - nation-building in America - by summoning the intelligence, creativity, boldness, and concern for the common good that are our nation's greatest natural resources.

Storms of my Grandchildren: the truth about the coming climate catastrophe and our last change to save humanity

by James Hansen

An urgent and provocative call to action from the world’s leading climate scientist—speaking out here for the first time with the full story of what we need to know about humanity’s last chance to get off the path to a catastrophic global meltdown, and why we don’t know the half of it.InStorms of My Grandchildren, Dr. James Hansen—the nation’s leading scientist on climate issues—speaks out for the first time with the full truth about global warming: The planet is hurtling even more rapidly than previously acknowledged to a climatic point of no return. Although the threat of human-caused climate change is now widely recognized, politicians have failed to connect policy with the science, responding instead with ineffectual remedies dictated by special interests. Hansen shows why President Obama’s solution, cap-and-trade, which Al Gore has signed on to, won’t work; why we must phase out all coal, and why 350 ppm of carbon dioxide is a goal we must achieve if our children and grandchildren are to avoid global meltdown and the storms of the book’s title. This urgent manifesto bucks conventional wisdom (including the Kyoto Protocol) and is sure to stir controversy, but Hansen—whose climate predictions have come to pass again and again, beginning in the 1980s when he first warned Congress about global warming—is the single most credible voice on the subject worldwide.Hansen paints a devastating but all-too-realistic picture of what will happen in the near future, mere years and decades from now, if we follow the course we’re on. But he is also an optimist, showing that there is still time to do what we need to save the planet. Urgent, strong action is needed, and this book, released to coincide with the Copenhagen Conference in December 2009, will be key in setting the agenda going forward to create a groundswell, a tipping point, to save humanity—and our grandchildren—from a dire fate more imminent than we had supposed.Learn more at www.stormsofmygrandchildren.com

The Threat of Global Warming

by Judith Woodburn

Look up at the sky. The Earth is surrounded by an invisible coat of gases called the atmosphere. These gases hold warmth in and keep our planet from getting too cold. Little by little, however, the atmosphere has been changing. As people burn fuel to drive cars, heat their homes, and run factories, they release more gases into the atmosphere. Many scients are afraid these gases will hold in too much heat. The Earth could get too warm.. This is called global warming.
At first, global warming might not seem so terrible. Wouldn't it be nice to have summer all the time? But people in many countries are worred that if global warming is not stopped, much of the Earth could get too hot and dry to grow food. Coastal areas could flood if too much polar ice and snow melt. People and animals would die.
Some scientists aren't sure all this will happen. But to make sure that it doesn't, we need to cut back now on the gases that cause global warming. If we wait too long, it may be too late.

A World Without Ice

by Henry Pollack

A member of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change, Univ. of Mich. geophysicist Pollack (Uncertain Science) shares the warning call of Al Gore (his co-recipient), that "humanity has arrived at an historic moment of decision." According to science, Pollack explains, humanity may soon lose the polar ice caps altogether, with dire consequences. Pollack explains how glacial ice is "a major player" in the climate: snow and ice "account for much of the sunshine reflected from the surface" and their disappearance will only accelerate the rate of global warming. Using geological evidence (800 bore-holes drilled on the earth's continental crust), Pollack and his colleagues have established that the past 500 years have seen a 2-degree increase in the Earth's average temperature, and that "fully half of the warming occurred in the 20th century." While taking account of countervailing forces (like periodic variations in the earth's orbit, explosive volcanism, and changes in solar radiation) Pollack shows that no single natural force can reverse the present trend, which if unchecked will render the Earth uninhabitable. This important wake up call joins a rapidly growing selection; this volume distinguishes itself with a Nobel pedigree and a sound, straightforward approach.

Coming Clean: Breaking America's Addiction to Oil and Coal

by Michael Brune

Americans are awakening to just how costly and destructive our fossil-fuel habit has become-to the environment, our national security and stature, our health, and especially our pocketbooks. We want to take action, to move our country down the path to clean energy, but we're not sure how. Coming Clean provides the road map, showing how we, as motivated citizens, can promote real solutions and collectively pressure government and corporations to change their energy priorities. Author Michael Brune tracks the myriad ways our thirst for dwindling supplies of oil and coal corrupts national policy and international finance, harms poor communities worldwide, and wreaks havoc on the climate. He describes the most promising developments in renewables, biofuels, and efficient design, and outlines an inspiring vision of the clean energy future within our reach.Brune and his organization, Rainforest Action Network, have had stunning success in convincing corporations-including Home Depot, Citi, and Bank of America-to green their business practices, and his activist skills and passion are at the heart of this book. Offering well-tested action strategies, Coming Clean is rooted in the author's faith that Americans acting together can create profound change.

Eaarth: making a life on a tough new planet

by Bill McKibben

"Read it, please. Straight through to the end. Whatever else you were planning to do next, nothing could be more important." —Barbara KingsolverTwenty years ago, withThe End of Nature, Bill McKibben offered one of the earliest warnings about global warming. Those warnings went mostly unheeded; now, he insists, we need to acknowledge that we've waited too long, and that massive change is not only unavoidable but already under way. Our old familiar globe is suddenly melting, drying, acidifying, flooding, and burning in ways that no human has ever seen. We've created, in very short order, a new planet, still recognizable but fundamentally different. We may as well call it Eaarth. That new planet is filled with new binds and traps. A changing world costs large sums to defend—think of the money that went to repair New Orleans, or the trillions it will take to transform our energy systems. But the endless economic growth that could underwrite such largesse depends on the stable planet we've managed to damage and degrade. We can't rely on old habits any longer. Our hope depends, McKibben argues, on scaling back—on building the kind of societies and economies that can hunker down, concentrate on essentials, and create the type of community (in the neighborhood, but also on the Internet) that will allow us to weather trouble on an unprecedented scale. Change—fundamental change—is our best hope on a planet suddenly and violently out of balance.

Garbage Land: on the Secret Trail of Trash

by Elizabeth Royte

Into our trash cans go dead batteries, dirty diapers, bygone burritos, broken toys, tattered socks, eight-track cassettes, scratched CDs, banana peels... But where do these things go next? In a country that consumes and then casts off more and more, what actually happens to the things we throw away?In Garbage Land, acclaimed science writer Elizabeth Royte leads us on the wild adventure that begins once our trash hits the bottom of the can.By showing us what happens to the things we've "disposed of," Royte reminds us that our decisions about consumption and waste have a very real impact-and that unless we undertake radical change, the garbage we create will always be with us: in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we consume.Radiantly written and boldly reported, Garbage Land is a brilliant exploration into the soiled heart of the American trash can.

On Thin Ice: the changing world of the polar bear

by Richard Ellis

As climate change continues to shrink Arctic winter ice fields, the polar bear faces extinction possibly by the end of the century, a stark reality wrought vivid by prolific science writer Ellis (Tuna) in this well-sourced geographical, historical, cultural, political and environmental overview. One of the largest land predators in the world, the great white bear hunted almost to the brink of extinction decades ago, and after a population rebound reduced again to an estimated 22,000 has become the "poster child" for global warming. A dramatic reduction in permanent, year-round ice is inhibiting access to seals, its almost exclusive food source, and as natural prey becomes elusive, bears are resorting to cannibalism. Ellis, rendering complex science engagingly simple, peppers his authoritative assessment of ursine plight with interesting tidbits bears and primates are the only bipedal mammals, for example. And despite an undeservedly fearsome reputation for savagery, the polar bear is in fact much less dangerous to man than man is to the bear, writes Ellis, as he pays impassioned homage to "a great white spirit."

Through the Eyes of the Vikings: an aerial vision of arctic lands

by Robert B. Haas

When Haas undertook this high-flying project, he set out to conduct extensive aerial photography in the lands of the Vikings--concentrating on regions that transect the Arctic Circle, specifically Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. While photographing these lands over a three-year period, Haas endeavoured to capture imagery reflecting three key visual elements of the region: landscapes, wildlife, and human footprint. As the resulting body of work makes abundantly clear, the shots that Haas brought back reveal a much deeper and more complex picture than anyone expected. In portraying the far north, Through the Eyes of the Vikings: An Aerial Vision of Arctic Lands goes far beyond simply attractive pictures. Rather, this unusual book tells a combined visual and textual story about an endangered region whose unexpected beauty is worth preserving for its own sake--and whose precarious fate will impact the entire globe. Several narrative features add context to the visuals. Haas contributes a thoughtful introduction, and essays in each chapter quote from the works of noted Arctic authors and explorers, both historical and contemporary. These messages span 100 years of human interaction with the northlands and reflect on topics that range from the risks inherent in Arctic exploration to the appealing simplicity of native life to the current challenges posed by climate change. To help readers navigate the lands of the Vikings, National Geographic's hallmark maps appear in full colour and detail. In addition to a large two-page map of the Arctic at the front of the book, the back matter features several pages of country maps, complete with notes on history, culture, topography, and environment, as well as facts on population, area, industries, and more. Through the Eyes of the Vikings reveals, in an unforgettable way, the visual magnificence and unique characteristics of each Arctic region--and it delivers a potent message of environmental urgency that cannot be ignored.

Water: the Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power, and Civilization

by Steven Solomon

This sprawling text reconstructs the history of civilization in order to illuminate the importance of water in human development from the first civilizations of the Fertile Crescent and the Indus River Valley to the present. Solomon (The Confidence Game) advances a persuasive argument: the prosperity of nations and empires has depended on their access to water and their ability to harness water resources. The story he tells is familiar, but his emphasis on water is unique: he shows how the Nile's flood patterns determined political unity and dynastic collapses in Egypt. He suggests that the construction of China's Grand Canal made possible a sixth-century reunification that eluded the Roman Empire. Finally, he attributes America's rise to superpower status to such 20th-century water innovations as the Panama Canal and Hoover Dam. Solomon surveys the current state of the world's water resources by region, making a compelling case that the U.S. and other leading democracies have untapped strategic advantages that will only become more significant as water becomes scarcer.

Almost Green: How I Saved 1/6th of a Billionth of the Planet

by James Glave

This is a green story with guy appeal. Glave, a journalist living in British Columbia, embarks on a mission to build what he calls an "Eco-Shed"—a small writing studio built to absorb sunlight, catch rainwater, and otherwise have a neutral effect on the environment. The only problems are the mammoth carport that blocks the direct sunlight, his budget, and a host of other issues, problems, and setbacks that he encounters along the way. While not always successful, he does manage throughout his journey to make connections in his small island community, with some green results. Glave approaches his endeavor as a journalist but also as a husband, a father, a son-in-law, a neighbor, and a dude—creating a humorous yet informative narrative. His focus on the building process and the bonding of those involved will appeal to anyone who has ever dreamed of smashing something with an excavator; his struggle to find a balance between his familial relationships and his drive to complete this project will strike a chord with many readers.

There are currently over 100,000 American homes operating wholly or partially ``off-the-grid'' of public utilities via the use of solar, wind, and water-generated energy sources. Potts has collected information from these energy ``pioneers,'' who live in homes located from Vermont to Hawaii. While somewhat anecdotal and rambling, his book gives a good feel for what this lifestyle entails, from careful home design to system maintenance and an increased awareness of energy consumption. This is not a ``how-to'' manual but rather a useful introduction to the many varieties of energy independence. An excellent annotated bibliography and resource list provide the next step in designing a plan for personal energy independence.
