Community Read: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind
The Antigo Public Library is thrilled to see our solar project finally coming to fruition after several years of working towards the goal of bringing the power of renewable energy to our library.
As part of our celebration and our efforts to help our patrons learn more about renewable energy, we are having a community read of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba. This book tells the story of 14-year-old Kamkwamba’s quest to build a functioning windmill out of junkyard scraps to help his Malawi village that was hit by a drought. Young Kamkwamba did not have enough money for food or school, so he spent his days in the library and figured out how to bring electricity to his village through the power of wind.
There are three versions of this book: a picture book, a young reader edition and an adult/older teen edition. We will have copies available at the library you can check out to read with your family, a Beanstack challenge, and a wide variety of events you can attend in October and November. Click on the images below to learn and explore more. If you are a part of another community book group, perhaps your group can read this book in October and November as well.
Stop by the library to pick up a copy of the book and explore the opportunities for learning below.
